COMPOSITE RESIN FILLINGS

Composite resin was introduced in the 1960s as an alternative to amalgams
(silver fillings). It is only in the last decade, though, that the resins have been
made strong enough to be used in back teeth.

Composite resin is a plastic mixture filled with glass made to resemble tooth
color. It is strong and mimics tooth structure very well. The use of resins is
multifold, from restoring conservative cavities to closing gaps in front teeth to
replacing fractured tooth structure. The material is very versatile and relatively
inexpensive.
