Teeth with silver (amalgam) fillings can become darker as the silver in the
amalgam fillings tends to be absorbed by the teeth. A darker tooth can also be a
sign of cavities occurring underneath the amalgam. In either case it is recommended that the amalgam filling be replaced with the appropriate aesthetic
restoration.
Silver fillings may allow bacterial leakage over time and can expand and
contract at different rates than the tooth structure, which increases the chances of
tooth fracture. It is unknown whether the mercury contained in amalgam is a
health risk but it has certainly raised many questions in past years. Teeth with
silver fillings are also prone to cavities since amalgam does not form a complete
seal with the tooth and there is always room for bacteria to squeeze by.
